Irish Whiskey Miracle in 1737

There goes whiskey- curing women from menopause again. I’m sure Mrs. Delap was thrilled.

The Virginia Gazette (Williamsburg, Virginia) June 17, 1737.

This funny little snippet was published in 1737, so I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that the average person’s understanding of the medicinal effects of whiskey were limited at the time. Mrs. Delap’s pregnancy was entirely due to her own health and fertility! While it’s very uncommon for a 68-year-old women to get pregnant, it CAN happen. What’s less likely is that woman being able to carry that child to term. The fact that Mrs. Delap survived the pregnancy, however, certainly would’ve called for lots of whiskey being poured- in celebration!
