SUMMARY:Tasting the Six Regions of Scotland- An Exploration of Single Malts
DESCRIPTION:Want to know more about single malt scotch? Here’s your opportunity.  There are no other tastings quite like this\, because usually a tasting is hosted by a representative of an umbrella corporation that owns specific brands/distilleries. The Dram Devotees get to pick from all over the map\, literally!  We’ve chosen some beautiful malt whiskies from each of the six distilling regions of Scotland. \nThere are 6 recognized distilling regions of Scotland. \n– The Highlands \n– The Lowlands \n– Speyside \n– The Islands \n– Cambeltown \n– Islay \nLet the confusion begin!  There were originally just four main regions (Highlands\, Lowlands\, Islay\, and Campbeltown)\, but the Islands and Speyside are generally accepted as sub-divisions of the Highlands\, which is the largest.  Though Speyside is now recognized by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) as a distinct region\, the Islands are not.  This does not exclude them from the list\, however\, because most “scotch folks” agree that the Islands deserve their own category. \nMost people will tell you that the regions display certain flavor characteristics\, and they would usually be correct in their assumption.  The problem with assuming is that there are too many exceptions to the rule.  Scotch does not follow rules.  There are examples of what wine enthusiasts would call “terroir”\, and a good deal of scotch production is based on tradition\, but modern styles don’t fit neatly into categories.  The only absolute rule is that scotch is always from Scotland. \nLet’s look into these distilling regions through our palates by tasting one bottle from each of the six.  We will not be tasting any blends this time around\, just single malts.  (The character of a distillery lies in their own distinct whiskies.)  We will discuss the history of the regions\, what makes them distinct\, and what each bottle reveals about that region. \nOur tasting will include the following: \nLowlands – Auchentoshan American Oak \nHighlands – Glengoyne 10 year \nSpeyside – G&M Mortlach 15 yr. \nIslands – Highland Park 15 yr. \nCampeltown – Springbank 10 yr. \nIslay – Bunnahabhain 12 yr. \n*There will also be light snacks available for pairing\, giveaways\, promotions and more! \nAfter the tasting\, please join us for cigars on the patio of the Fairways Golf Club.  Hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Variations on Whiskey- A Diverse Tasting Event
DESCRIPTION:What makes one whiskey so different from another? Is there really as much variety in whiskey as there is in beer? Yes. \n\nI’ve been playing with the idea of hosting a tasting like this for a while. I want to showcase the very large differences that exist from one whisk(e)y to the next. The common perception is that all whiskey is the same – some good\, some very good. In this tasting\, we will explore the idea that whiskey is just as diverse a product (if not\, more so) as beer or wine. \n\nIn fact\, whiskey is made from fermented grains – also known as beer. The foundation of whiskey can be as varied as India Pale Ale or Stout and the final product more so. I often say “whiskey is what beer wants to be when it grows up.” From its beer roots\, whiskey variety explodes into tastes that can be bold\, subtle\, sophisticated\, nuanced and surprising. \n\nWhiskey can be made from any grain. It can be blended\, flavored\, cut with rock candy\, aged for varying lengths of time in barrels made from different types of white oak with different char levels\, finished in various types of previously used casks\, and bottled from single barrels\, small batches or large vats. It can be filtered or unfiltered\, diluted with either water or other grain spirits (but not below 40% ABV)\, made anywhere in the world in different climates and at different elevations and can be influenced by many types of yeast strains. The diversity that exists in whiskey is only limited by the fact that it must be made from grain and/or by the creativity of the distiller. \n\nLet’s explore some interesting whiskeys that are vastly different from one another. We will be focusing mainly on the variety that comes from distilling and aging techniques over additives\, flavorings or blends (at least this time!). DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Dram Devotees of Bucks County will host a 5 course whiskey dinner with gourmet food pairing and four of Ireland’s finest drams. \nWith the holidays here and the new year almost upon us\, it is a perfect time to sit down with friends and sample some fine whiskeys.  The Temperance House in Newtown is under new management and its new owner and chef have partnered with the Dram Devotees to create 5 courses to enhance and compliment the four whiskey being presented. \nThe whiskeys we will taste are from the Cooley distillery\, an Irish whiskey distillery\, located on the Cooley Peninsula in County Louth\, Ireland.  Cooley distillery makes mostly single malts\, differing from the more commonplace Irish blends you may be used to seeing.  (Those blends incorporate triple distilled whiskeys.)  Cooley’s whiskeys tend to appeal to the American palate\, which prefers a stronger flavor profile.  Like American whiskey and scotch\, their whiskey is distilled twice\, which allows more flavor components to remain in the finished product. \nAaron Guldin\, ambassador for Cooley’s whiskeys (Beam-Suntory) will be joining us for our tasting and discussion about their whiskeys\, and will answer any questions you may have. \nThe gourmet pairing menu was carefully chosen by the chef and the Dram Devotees of Bucks County to highlight the qualities of each whiskey. \n\nConnemara Peated Irish Single Malt Whiskey \nSauteed Mussels in olive oil w/ Smoked Andouille Sausage \n*Intermezzo (palate cleanser) of Irish Aero Mint Chocolates* \n 2 Gingers Irish Whiskey \nSeared Scallops w/ Rutabaga Purree & Lavender Beurre Blanc \nGreenore Single Grain Irish Whiskey \nRack of Lamb Lollipops w/ Apricot Chutney\, Fried Goat Cheese and Haricot Vert \nThe Tyrconnell Single Malt Irish Whiskey \nVenison Loin wrapped in Bacon w/ Whiskey and Wild Mushroom Demi Glace\, Roasted Brussel Sprouts and Baby Carrots \nIrish Kiss Cocktail –made with 2 Gingers Irish Whiskey

SUMMARY:Alternatives to "Pappy Van Winkle" Bourbon Whiskey Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Pappy Van Winkle is the most sought after bourbon whiskey on the market today. In order for most citizens to get their hands on a bottle\, they may have to set up a tent outside of a liquor store after a delivery\, pay north of a $1000 for a bottle\, or spend $150 on a 2 ounce pour at a bar. \nSometimes the popularity of a brand can carry it away and leave the consumer wondering what they are actually paying for. In this case\, it is rarity\, not necessarily flavor that you are paying for…I will present some comparable flavor alternatives at our tasting and dispel many myths surrounding the Pappy Van Winkle brand. \n“Pappy” Van Winkle was the patriarch of the Van Winkle family and introduced “a whisper of wheat” into Kentucky’s bourbon recipe. A bourbon must be at least 51% corn\, but\, normally\, the balance of the mashbill is rye and barley. Rye is usually the flavoring grain\, but the Van Winkles found that wheat was a softer\, and gentler flavor component for their grain bill. There are very few wheated whiskeys available on the market today\, but we will explore the few that exist. We will sample four wheated whiskeys. (Perhaps a surprise bonus pour…) There will be prize giveaways and gifts for all attendees!

The new owner and chef have partnered with the Dram Devotees to create 4 courses to enhance and compliment each whiskey being presented. \nRye whiskey is one of the fastest growing trends in American whiskey today. It’s about time\, too\, as rye whiskey is native to Pennsylvania and has deep roots in American history. Whistle Pig is one of my favorite rye whiskeys. The ten year old is made with 100% rye grains and has a finish that lingers beautifully. The brand has won numerous awards and I feel it is a brand worth exploring further. Each rye whiskey expression in our tasting is dramatically different in nose\, flavor profile\, and finish. They are a few of the finest examples of ryes available on the market today. \nMira Bhakta\, steward of the brand for Whistle Pig\, will be joining us for a discussion of the brand\, its history\, and its contribution to America’s new-found enthusiasm for rye whiskey\, as well as answer any of our questions. Lighter and more delicate than most whiskeys (they’ve been distilled three times instead of the usual 2 times) they cater to a variety of tastes\, especially the American consumer. Anyone interested in tasting whiskey would be remiss if they did not approach Irish whiskey with enthusiasm.  With few exceptions\, Irish whiskey is unpeated and made with a combination of malted and unmalted barley.  The traditional pot still style is alive and well in Ireland. \nLet’s taste some delicious Irish Whiskeys! \n1. Irish whiskey has had a tough time recovering from its losses of both distilleries and production\, but now is the fastest growing segment of the whiskey industry. The return of brands and pot still crafted whiskeys is a welcome one. \nBill Helfferrich will be our special guest from Pernod Ricard\, and he will be joining us in our discussions and tasting. \nWe will be tasting our Irish whiskeys at Nektar Wine and Whisky Bar in New Hope\, PA. It is a fairly new location with beautiful views of the Aquatong Creek and the Delaware River beyond! It is a wonderful spot to meet for drinks right in the heart of New Hope.
