SUMMARY:Compass Box Scotch Whisky Tasting at Fairways Golf Club
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve never tried Compass Box whiskies\, you’re in for delicious event! \nJoin the Dram Devotees of Bucks County as we taste our way through some of the most impressive\, modern scotch whiskies available. Compass Box is a blending house that is modeled after the Scottish blending houses of old. What began in the 1840’s with Andrew Usher II blending grain and malt whisky in Edinburgh\, Scotland\, became a movement of establishing blending houses in the 1870’s by men like Chivas\, Ballantine\, Walker and Dewar in London\, England. These men revolutionized scotch whiskey and men like John Glaser of Compass Box (with their Blending Room also in London) are continuing that tradition today. \nIn an industry that has steadfastly remained committed to ‘the way we’ve always done things’\, Compass Box focuses relentlessly on creativity\, process innovations\, and exploring the many ways we all can enjoy the pleasures of Scotch whisky. \nIf we consider a single malt whisky to be the whisky equivalent of a solo musician\, then a blend can be compared to an orchestra. A blend is a precise taste reproduction every time\, and that precision requires incredibly talented and well-respected nosers and tasters from the whisky industry. We will discuss this skill and use a nosing kit to help distinguish flavor and scent profiles from the whisky we taste together. Bring your tasting journal to keep notes! \n1. SUMMARY:Tasting the Six Regions of Scotland- An Exploration of Single Malts
DESCRIPTION:Want to know more about single malt scotch? Here’s your opportunity.  There are no other tastings quite like this\, because usually a tasting is hosted by a representative of an umbrella corporation that owns specific brands/distilleries. The Dram Devotees get to pick from all over the map\, literally!  We’ve chosen some beautiful malt whiskies from each of the six distilling regions of Scotland. \nThere are 6 recognized distilling regions of Scotland. \n– The Highlands \n– The Lowlands \n– Speyside \n– The Islands \n– Cambeltown \n– Islay \nLet the confusion begin!  There were originally just four main regions (Highlands\, Lowlands\, Islay\, and Campbeltown)\, but the Islands and Speyside are generally accepted as sub-divisions of the Highlands\, which is the largest.  Though Speyside is now recognized by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) as a distinct region\, the Islands are not.  This does not exclude them from the list\, however\, because most “scotch folks” agree that the Islands deserve their own category. \nMost people will tell you that the regions display certain flavor characteristics\, and they would usually be correct in their assumption.  The problem with assuming is that there are too many exceptions to the rule.  Scotch does not follow rules.  There are examples of what wine enthusiasts would call “terroir”\, and a good deal of scotch production is based on tradition\, but modern styles don’t fit neatly into categories.  The only absolute rule is that scotch is always from Scotland. \nLet’s look into these distilling regions through our palates by tasting one bottle from each of the six.  We will not be tasting any blends this time around\, just single malts.  (The character of a distillery lies in their own distinct whiskies.)  We will discuss the history of the regions\, what makes them distinct\, and what each bottle reveals about that region. \nOur tasting will include the following: \nLowlands – Auchentoshan American Oak \nHighlands – Glengoyne 10 year \nSpeyside – G&M Mortlach 15 yr. \nIslands – Highland Park 15 yr. \nCampeltown – Springbank 10 yr. \nIslay – Bunnahabhain 12 yr. \n*There will also be light snacks available for pairing\, giveaways\, promotions and more! \nAfter the tasting\, please join us for cigars on the patio of the Fairways Golf Club.  Hope to see you there!
